[solved]: PORSCHE 911 (996) Carrera 4 S

Message par stmoritzer » 03 avr. 2010 11:23

It's slowly time to replace my current car - more over it's time to realise one of my dreams to own a 911 :D

During the last month the idea got more realistic, also my wife like the idea to have a "Sally" in the garage (important point  ). Second hand offer for the 996 models are in an affordable price range 50-60kCHF

I like the design of the C4S over the regular C4,

Any suggestions, hints, experiences are welcome ...

996 Carrera 4S
color: silver, grey silver met. or black
interiour: black
I'll use it all year around hence offers with winter/summer tyres are welcome
price : ~50k, in case a very interesting offer up to 60k CHF

I perfectly understand your "dream" as I realized it some time ago... and I use it all year long... including when I go to ski!

No special advice to give you as looking for a second hand car is always the same: check services, car owner history, tires, leather, gearbox, etc. and from my point of view, avoid Tiptronic. Try to look for a car with the "winter kit" (wheels and tires) as new, Porsche sales it for an amazing CHF 6.5 grants. Keep in mind that the C4S comes with a Turbo look and size which means you can't go with other wheels (17 inch for example).

After years, 60k kms and regular services, all I had to change is my CD charger... that's about it.

T

PS: when I'll start working again (will it ever happen again?), I'll exchange it for a 997/I or maybe the II...

Looks good and I would definitely take a 996/II... but, I would take it from a Porsche dealer as they provide the Porche Approved warranty. From my point of view, even if you pay 2k or 4k more, it is the way to go in order to not worry if something goes wrong for 1 or 2 years.

RMS, oil separator, clutch master cylinder, interior creaks, my 2002 Carrera 2 was a total relief to dump at a steep discount at a dealer for an 04 Turbo. Really felt like the thing was about to snap in my fingers and it only had 80'000km.
These cars just don't age well. My bro in law has a Carrera 4, has RMS problems, alternator problems, clutch pedal has become hard as wood and mushy like an old chewing gum, and it's not like he's trashing the car.

Just don't buy a 996, even a 3.6 ... and even if they are cheap.

Mmmhhh... looks like I have been lucky then... 132k kms and still fine.

By the way, what RMS stands for?

Rear Main Seal, the seal on crank at the exit of the engine block towards the gearbox. Seminal problems on 996 Carreras (... and on 997 GT3s). Part is cheap but labor hefty (2-3KCHF).
Some cars leak on and on and on, others don't.
My Carrera, like many, had it changed several times, I think twice before I bought it then once while I had it.

obviously not the answer I would like to get  but thanks for any comments, I hope to get a good one without those problems.
I'll ask the previous owners if they had those problems.

That's a good way to proceed: ask for the invoices or call Porsche Switzerland technical dpt to ask for the warranty history of the car. Those that had the problem are much, much more likely to have it again. And put the car on a lift, any hint of an oil leak at the plane between block and gearbox is ominous.
And a hard mushy clutch.
And the oil separator.
And the alternator (dealers have easy ways to check charge current).
Good luck

Looks like an early 996/II as engine is 3.6 but interior is still 996/I (old GPS system with small screen). There might be other differences...

IMO, looks a bit pricey even if mileage is low, I'd take a more recent car with big GPS screen...

Personnally I would never buy a 996 except a GT or a TT... With your price range I would look for a nice 993 4S or even better, a 2S...
