Alfa Romeo et Mazda annoncent la signature d'un MoU (Memorandum of Understanding, soit le prélude, généralement non contraignant, à un contrat) pour le co-développement et la manufacture d'un nouveau roadster propulsion basé sur la prochaine génération de Mazda MX-5. La plateforme sera commune mais le style et les motorisations seront spécifiques. Production chez Mazda à Hiroshima des deux versions, lancement de la version Alfa en 2015.

Fiat SpA will announce within a month a technical cooperation between its Ferrari and Maserati subsidiaries on engine work aimed at rebuilding the Alfa Romeo brand.
"Ferrari will take a more active role in engine development for Alfa, similar to what Ferrari already did for Maserati," Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said Wednesday in a call with analysts.
Marchionne added that "engines worth wearing the Alfa badge" remain the biggest issue he is facing in reviving the sports-car brand.
After struggling for years to relaunch Alfa, Marchionne in November announced a new plan, calling for nine new-model introductions from 2013 through 2016. He hopes to triple Alfa sales to 300,000 units annually in 2016, from about 100,000 last year.

Three new models
Marchionne said Alfa is currently working on the development of three new products, in addition to the brand's three existing models.
A Fiat spokesman told Automotive News Europe that Marchionne was referring to the mid-sized Giulia sedan and wagon and a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster.
The Giulia variants, set to replace the Alfa 159 discontinued at the end of 2011, are due to debut in Europe in 2014 and in the United States in 2015. The Giulia models will be built in Cassino, central Italy. The factory already builds the Giulietta compact for Alfa as well as the Delta for Lancia and the Bravo for Fiat.
The Alfa roadster will be built by Mazda Motor Corp. in Hiroshima, Japan, together with the replacement of the MX-5 roadster, starting in 2015.
The spokesman added that the Alfa 4C limited-edition coupe, unveiled as a concept car at the Geneva auto show in March 2011, is already considered part of the existing Alfa range. The others are the MiTo subcompact and Giulietta compact.

The 4C will go on sale by the end of the year in Europe and the United States. Production is planned at 2,500 units a year. Of those, 1,000 would be bound for Europe and the United States each; the balance would be sold in the rest of the world.

Sources familiar with the matter, however, say plans to start building the main models in the new Alfa Romeo range in Italy next year are facing delays. Fiat is also aiming to take full control of its profitable U.S. unit Chrysler to gain guaranteed and quick access to the cash flow and technology it needs to compete in a global market. And an agreement to buy out Chrysler's minority shareholder has become hostage to the outcome of a battle in a U.S. court, which could push the deal back to 2015. One analyst said the two issues might be connected, with uncertainty over the timing of the Chrysler deal possibly having knock-on consequences for investment decisions.

"It seems a lot of decisions are hanging upon what they do with Chrysler," said UBS automotive analyst Philippe Houchois. "Once they have a deal and a price and have worked out how to finance it, they can decide what to do" in other areas. A fund manager, who declined to be named, said: "The two drivers of this story are Alfa and the Chrysler merger, and we've had very little news flow in recent months." The manager added: "I am expecting the speed of investment to pick up from now on, because if you want to have an adequate pipeline for next year you need to get moving now."

'Waiting and waiting'

Fiat's stands at the Frankfurt auto show will be short of new products, while mass-market competitors will grab the limelight with previews of possible new models such as the new Ford S-Max minivan, Opel's gullwing Monza concept, Citroen's C4 Picasso minivan and Peugeot's 308 compact. It's not that Fiat has been idle. The automaker has moved out two new models of its top-end Maserati sports car and the first of the new Alfa Romeo model lineup -- the limited-edition 4C sports car -- is expected to start production at the end of this year. However, Marchionne has yet to sign off investment in the plant expected to build the likely biggest sellers of the new Alfa Romeo range, a large sedan and the mid-sized Giulia, putting a question mark over whether the models will hit the showrooms next year as planned.

Alfa Romeo has planned to launch a rear-wheel-drive large sedan based on the Maserati Ghibli as early as the end of 2014. But this summer Alfa shelved the idea to use Maserati's underpinnings for the car as too expensive. It is looking at basing this new flagship on the new rwd/awd platform also planned for the Giulia. "Marchionne seems to be waiting and waiting for something to take place in the stars," said IHS Automotive senior analyst Ian Fletcher. "He's going to have to do something soon."

C'est bien beau de sortir des autos comme la 8C et la 4C pour l'image, mais en milieu et haut de gamme c'est le grand trou. Si les remplaçantes de la 159 et de feu la 164 tardent trop, l'effet d'image sera oublié.

Aux dernières nouvelles, la nouvelle stratégie produit d'Alfa Romeo sera présentée .. au premier trimestre 2014.
La gamme devrait se composer de la manière suivante:
- un petit roadster commun à Mazda
- la 4C
- un petit SUV
- la Giulia
- une berline (probablement basée sur la plateforme de la Ghibli)
MiTo et Giulietta passent à la trappe (ce qui parait surprenant).

La nouvelle plateforme propulsion/AWD d'Alfa (qui doit être partagée avec Chrysler et Dodge) porte le nom de code "Giorgio" (source). Toujours pas de dates. On peut se demander ce qu'il restera du réseau lorsque la ou les voitures sortiront.

Le plan que Sergio Marchionne devrait dévoiler pour Alfa Romeo est sensé contenir 7 nouveaux modèles d'ici à 2018 (il semble que le 4C Spider n'est pas compté dans ce chiffre):

- Spider en 2016 (plus clair s'il s'agit toujours du développement conjoint avec Mazda ou pas)
- Giulia berline et break (Segment D), en 2017-2018
- Alfetta berline et break (Segment E), en 2017-2018
- Deux crossovers, un compact et un plus grand, en 2017-2018 aussi

Donc big-bang en 2017-2018 et pas de remplacement aux Giulietta et MiTo.
